Peace And Joy
Author: Melva Cooper

Like millions across our nation and around the world, on September 11, 2001, I spent many hours watching television as the horror of terrorism against America played out live before our eyes. Such destruction could not have been imagined in our finite minds. But, on 9-11 we were able to see it for ourselves.

It seemed I couldn't get enough energy to turn off all that violence as I watched hijacked planes crash into the two World Trade Center Towers in New York City, and then again into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. I watched as the President of our United States moved twice from one security area to another and then finally on to our nation's capitol. I listened as he tried to reassure the American people that justice would be done to the people responsible for these criminal acts. Scene after scene came across the television showing desperation from those directly and indirectly hurt from the crashes.

When our seven year-old granddaughter, Mary Kathryn, came home from school the day of the tragedy, her first question to me was, "Grandma, does this mean it is getting closer to time for Jesus to come get us and take us to heaven?" Loving on that precious little girl, I agreed with her that this was another reason for us to be ready for the return of Jesus in all His glory. From that moment on, her countenance glowed and she expressed to me repeatedly, "Grandma I am ready for Jesus to come back."

While preparing myself to attend a prayer meeting at church that night, I kept thinking of the joy I saw on Mary Kathryn's face. There was none of the heaviness I had been feeling all day. I realized anew we weren't fighting flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness and against the wicked spirits in the Heavenly realms.

In Jesus Name, I rebuked the heavy heart I had been experiencing. Amid all the 9-11 news that kept streaming across the television God gave me a peace in my heart and put joy on my countenance.
